Hyperzincemia

Zinc is a bluish white metal commonly used in preservatives and in anti-corrosive applications. The accepted daily dosage level of zinc to maintain our general well being is  about 15 milligrams.

As long as the daily intake of zinc is within allowable limits, there is no problem. When the level of zinc ingested becomes high, it is unhealthy and is   this condition is known as Hyperzincemia. Researchers in the University of Texas South western have come out with startling revelations among a test population of denture cream users with daily Zinc levels of up to 330 milligrams.

Hyperzincemia has been associated with a host of complications such as severe Anaemia and Neutropenia. A well-researched document by the American Academy of Neurology cites denture cream as an unusual source of excessive Zinc which leads to Hypocupremia and other neurological ailments. Hypocupremia is a condition where, the body is depleted of its minimum required level of Copper. Myelin is a chemical which acts as an insulator for the nerves in the human body. Demyelination or the loss of this Myelin sheath has been attributed to Hypocupremia, according to a publication of the Neurological Society of India. Complications such as Nephrotic syndrome, Wilson’s disease, Neuropathy, etc., occur due to Hypocupremia.

Medical complications such as liver dysfunction, Pyoderma Gangrenosum (inflammatory skin disease), Neutropenia (haematological disorder), severe anaemia, etc., have all been reported from Hyperzincemia patients. Unfortunately, loss of balance and neurological complications are often initially misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis. By then it becomes too late to co-relate the symptoms and identify Hyperzincemia due to chronic usage of denture cream as a possible cause.

The American Society of Neurology has found Zinc concentrations from 17000 to 34000 µg/g in denture fixative creams such as Poligrip and Fixodent. Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of these denture creams by the affected users.

If you know someone who exhibits symptoms similar to those stated above, immediately consult a physician and request to investigate denture cream usage as a possible cause. 1. What brand is safe?

I just want to know what I can use that won’t poison me. I’ve more family illnesses than I can deal with, I’m not high on the list. We’re dealing with ologists for various parts of the body and have 2 surgeries over the next ten days, a biopsy that I believe is considered minor surgery. I’ve got too many of the symptons to ignore but don’t have time to consult or to see a doctor at the moment.
